Last Ten Books

This is my list of the Last Book . . .

1. I gave up on

Mink River by Brian Doyle. I called it quits at 23% (and this was the second time I tried to read it). This was not a book for me. Most of the time I felt myself skimming because nothing happened. This book, at least as far as I read, basically contains vignettes or interludes on various residents’ day to day lives. The story, if there is one, focuses on the town than on any character. And so, there doesn’t seem to be an actual plot. Maybe had the town actually come to life somehow . . . oh well. Other people liked it, but it just wasn’t for me.

2. I re-read

I am a big re-reader. I have my faves and I will go back to them over and over. And I actually re-listen to audiobooks a lot. It’s like meditation for me—relaxing, calming, and centering. My most recent relisten was the Graphic Audio full cast version of Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. I love Kate & Curran!

The full cast audiobook is an amazing experience. While I had read the book and listened to the original audiobook narrated by Renée Raudman (who is awesome), there was something magical about listening to a full cast version.

3. I bought

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune. I absolutely loved The House by the Cerulean Sea, so when TJ Klune announced the sequel, I immediately pre-ordered it. It arrived about two weeks ago. I want to reread House first, so I haven’t yet dived into it.

4. I said I read but didn’t

This is not something I do. I’m fairly honest about what I’ve read and what I haven’t. Even if it’s a book that I probably should have read, like some of the classics. I’m more likely to forget I’ve read a book.

5. I wrote in the margins of

Witchful Thinking by Zoe Howe. I read this book as a part of a traveling book book club and the owner of this book encouraged us to write notes and thoughts in the margins.

6. I had signed

Winter Lost by Patricia Briggs. It’s signed by both Patricia and the cover artist, Dan dos Santos. I’m a huge fan of Patricia Briggs. Her Mercy Thompson series is one of my faves.

And Dan dos Santos’s art is amazing. Go check out his website, The Art of Dan dos Santos.

7. I lost from the library

It’s been nearly two years, so I don’t remember the title. Just that I lost it and had to pay the library to replace it. I also lost the booksleeve that I had it in. I either set it down at the grocery store or left it on the metro. Sadly, when I retraced my steps in an attempt to recover it, no one had turned it in.

8. I had to replace

Soul Music by Terry Pratchett. I ordered it from an online used bookstore. They had marked it as “good” condition, but when it arrived, the back cover was torn right across the middle and the front cover by the spine also had a tear (that had been taped). This book was, at best, well-read, and honestly, it shouldn’t have been sold.

9. I rated 5 stars

Network Effect by Martha Wells. I love Murderbot!

“Just remember you’re not alone here.”

I never know what to say to that. I am actually alone in my head, and that’s where 90 plus percent of my problems are.

I totally relate to that.

And, okay, so number 9 was really supposed to be the last book I argued over, but I haven’t argued over any books recently. So I changed it (writer’s prerogative!) because MURDERBOT!

10. I couldn’t find

The Summerfolk by Doris Burn, who also illustrated it.

I was going to buy it to give as a gift. Originally published in 1968, it’s now an out of print book. But her Andrew Henry’s Meadow has been republished. It’s a story about children who want to feel special and appreciated for who they are.

Happy reading!
