Saying Adios to Big Tech Social Media

Quite a while ago, I deleted my Twitter and Facebook accounts. (I never got into TikTok.)  I’ve not been keen on what big tech is doing.

Lately, I’ve been reading and learning about AI, and in particular, the data centers that are required to power AI and way tech companies are trqining and using AI.

I won’t get into all my reasons. You can do your own research and come to your own conclusions. But for me, I am not keen on what Meta big tech is doing.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I decided to delete my Instagram account. With the influencers, all the ads, and algorithm nonsense, the final straw was the fact my photos could be used (and probably are used) to train AI.

For me, that’s a hard pass.

Same way it’s a hard pass on these tech companies using published books and music and art without any consideration to the authors, composers, and artists.

But I also miss posting photos and seeing others photos. So I started looking around for alternatives. And surprise, there are quite a few depending on what you’re wanting.

I chose Monnett because

  • No algorithms. Your feed is chronological only from people you follow.
  • Privacy. The App & its infrastructure is based in Germany, which has strong privacy laws.
  • Free. It does have a paid option that removes ads completely, but the ads aren’t obnoxious.
  • Focus on humans, not users. It feels like Instagram was back in the day.

Surprisingly, Monnett actually wrote a post on alternatives to Insta. Granted, they’re a little biased, but they’re not wrong.

I’ve just recently transitioned to Monnett, and so I don’t have a lot of content . . . yet. But that’s where you’ll find the up-to-date photos from my adventures. Same user name—wanderinglynn—new platform.

So, if you have also been looking for an alternative photo sharing site, join me on Monnett.

  1. That’s not a bad idea! I’ve noticed that Facebook is absorbing my time, and I don’t even enjoy it. I’m still a big fan of Litsy as well but I would definitely like more options so I will check out your post.
